December 6, 2012 – SMART goals for 2013!

December 6, 2012

Our lives may not be completely in our own control, but it is important to recognize that we do have power.  Not just over our own actions, but also over our words, which affect how others feel … and our thoughts, which affect how we feel.  Becoming aware of your thoughts and learning to focus more on the positive ones rather than the negative ones is an important step in living a happier life.

New Year’s resolutions are an important part of the holiday season.  Now is the time to think about the life you want for yourself in 2013, and to choose a Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timed (S.M.A.R.T.) goal for yourself.  Set a goal and figure out how you’ll get there.  Whether it is related to smoking or drinking, nutrition or stress, or you decide that 2013 is the year to invest in getting your most fit ever, planting the seed now will make January 1st even more special.

So sit down, grab a piece of paper and a pen and write down what you want out of life – it’s within your reach!

Remember, your goals have to be S.M.A.R.T
Specific – I want to increase my 1-mile running speed to under 7 minutes by March 31, 2013.
Measurable – Using a timer, a 1 mile running course and a running table to keep record of my times, I can measure my progress and my running speed.
Achievable – I’m in the 7:20 minute/mile range currently, so trying to get under 7 minutes is realitically achievable in the next 3 months if I stick to a consistent and progressive running regime.
Relevant – I am an athlete, and fitness has been and always will be a big part of my life.  It’s what makes me happy.
Timed – This will happen by March 31, 2013.

Now you try!!

December is always a fun, but hectic month!  Stay tuned as I post what’s in store for us in a few hours….
